Your compassion and kindness do not go unnoticed.
Our lives biggest moments, sad and happy are spent with men and women in white or blue uniforms. From the birth of a person , communicable diseases, mental health, chronic conditions and eventually death , nurses are always by our bed sides.
Today gives us an opportunity to celebrate the tremendous work that is done by nurses in caring for us world wide.
International Nurses Day is celebrated on May 12 every year and this year it's being celebrated under the theme, A voice to lead: Invest in nursing and respect rights to secure global health in the nursing profession to strengthen health systems around the world.
Nurses play a crucial role in ensuring that there is accessible and affordable person centred health care for everyone.
Their work do not just end in hospitals and clinics but they also play an essential role in the society by advocating for health promotion ,educating the public on how to prevent and treat certain diseases.
Besides providing care and treating the sick, many nurses are also teachers who teach about certain diseases like diabetes, HIV/AIDS and the COVID 19 pandemic. Nurses are also a good source of information when it comes to issues of sexual and reproductive health rights. The welfare of every family is heavily dependent on the work that is done by nurses.
Despite all the tremendous work that is being done by nurses there is a great need to invest in the health system so as to ease the work of health professionals in order to meet the needs of individuals and communities.
International Nurses Day is a day that highlights the important role of nurses in fulfilling the health care system of every nation. However the COVID 19 pandemic exposed the underinvestment in health systems by different countries.
As frontline workers, many nurses were found without enough Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) thereby putting their families at risk.
There is need to take care of those who take care of us through investing in the health system to make their work easy and manageable.
Like in any other proffession, women in the health sector are not spared from the concerns and worries of any other working women and these include exploitation and sexual harrasement. Women tend to be promoted on the pretext of their looks or sexual appearance instead of merit.
This shows that issues of gender equality also needs to be addressed in the health sector to make it a safe environment for women who take care of us from when we are born to when we pass away and the health ups and downs in between.
This a day to let nurses know that their compassion and kindness towards patients do not go unnoticed.
Happy International Nurses Day.
