Hello March, Women's Month

The third month of the Gregorian calendar is one of my favorite months of the year, not only because it is the month that I was born but because it is the month set aside to celebrate one of the world’s greatest wonders to ever walk on this earth Women.

March is a special month set aside to celebrate women and the tremendous contributions to history, culture and society. This month means different things to different people, for me it means celebrating every woman from all walks of life and the important work that they do from the family, society and cooperate world.

It is also a time for women to reflect on what it means to be a woman in the 21st century, an era where a lot of advancements have been made with regards to women’s rights and gender equality yet women are still being left behind in other sectors proof that we still have a long way to go.

Every year women’s month is celebrated with a different theme and this year’s theme is very close to my heart, “Celebrating Women who tell our stories”. For the longest time women have been an important part of storytelling. If you grew up in an African home then this is not new to you, the idea of sitting around the fire listening to our grandmothers telling us folktales brings a nostalgic feeling. We all owe a lot of what we know from the tales told by our grandmothers and mothers and that’s just how important women’s contribution to society is.

This month is the perfect time to celebrate women who tell our stories from our grandmothers to all women who have been active in all forms of media which includes print, radio, television, blogs, podcasts and more. These are incredible women who have defied all odds and dedicated their lives to telling stories of other women and the society at large.

Throughout history women have been instrumental in shaping and passing on our history through word of mouth, print and all other forms of media.

As this month progresses, let us take a moment to reflect on our role as women in our different societies, celebrate those women who are at the forefront of storytelling and breaking barriers in a male dominated industry.

Women are special and so are their stories and no one can tell our stories better than ourselves.

Happy Women’s Month
