International Woman's Day

Imagine a world where women are free, a gender equal world where women are not treated as second class citizens. An accommodating world that is diverse and inclusive, a world where women can stand tall and venture into an industry of their choice unapologetically without any discrimination for it. These are my thoughts on this eight day of March. A day set aside to celebrate women and their achievements and raise awareness against all forms of abuse and discrimination.

For women across the world this is a time to reflect on the role played by gender in our day to day  lives, to reflect on where we have come from our success and failures along the way and to come and stand together with one voice.

The United Nations Theme for the international Women’s day for 2023 is DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality. This theme helps us to celebrate women and girls who have contributed to technology and online education and how technological advancements can help in achieving gender equality and empowerment of all women and girls.

It is not so long ago when the whole world was struck by a pandemic, COVID 19. Our lives became digital from work, school and all other spheres of life, a great move but however there is a voice that was alienated, the voice of women and girls in the rural areas. Women from rural areas suffered because of the digital participation divide. Hence this is also a time for women to come together and figure out how to achieve gender equality and empowerment using the digital space.

Like everyone else, women are faced with a lot of developmental and humanitarian challenges and all there can be tackled if women are brought into the technological world to create more creative solutions and innovations that meet women’s needs and promote gender equality.

Every development comes with its set of disadvantages that cannot be overlooked. There is great need to focus on the importance of protecting the rights of women and girls in digital spaces. If not managed well the digital space can be a source of cyber bullying against women.

Women have been victims of online violence for a long time and it’s high time this comes to an end and one way of ending this is giving a woman a place in the digital space to create solutions for their own problems, to create a safe digital world for themselves and other women out there and most importantly an inclusive digital world for all women out there.

Women deserve to feel safe in the digital space hence let us come together for DigitALL: Innovation and technology for gender equality.

In one of his songs, The day women took over Common (My all time favourite Musician) says," Now imagine a world ,if women took over. Imagine if women ruled the world like, how better things could be. You know we thinking of feminine energy and the love that would be out there if women took over..."
